Taplejung Gold Cup tournament to commence on Thursday



TAPLEJUNG: The Taplejung Gold Cup football tournament is set to commence tomorrow (Thursday).

The tournament is being organized to coincide with the Lakhejatra festival in the district. This tradition of hosting the competition during Lakhejatra dates back to 2029 BS.

The football tournament was suspended for the past three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, eight teams will participate in the tournament, including the local team, Manavara Club.

The opening match will see Manavara Club facing off against Jute Bikas Football Club Itahari.

Additionally, teams such as Phidim Sports Club from Panchthar, Red Horse Club from Ilam, Gorkha Sports Club, and Redstar Club from Jhapa will also be partaking in the tournament. Notably, Pathari Football Club from Morang and United Kurseong Club from Darjeeling, India, complete the roster of competing teams.

The winners of the tournament will be awarded a trophy, medals, certificates, and a prize of Rs. 3,11,100.

The runners-up will receive a trophy, medals, certificates, and a sum of Rs. 1,11,111, organizers said.
