KATHMANDU: Amidst mounting concerns over escalating gold smuggling activities, Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has called for the formation of a high-level investigation committee to curb the increasing instances of gold smuggling.

This appeal aligns with the stance of the main opposition party, CPN-UML, which has been steadfastly advocating for a comprehensive inquiry into the matter. In contrast, the ruling coalition and the government have dismissed the necessity of forming such a committee.

Expressing his endorsement for the formation of a high-level investigation committee, Koirala echoed the sentiments of the UML during a recent NC meeting. He argued that the perilous rise of gold smuggling demands a strategic response in the form of a dedicated committee.

During a parliamentary party meeting convened to deliberate on the issue, Koirala emphasized that Nepal has become a hub for gold smuggling and highlighted the urgency of establishing a high-level investigation committee to eradicate this illicit trade.

“The gravity of gold smuggling necessitates our utmost attention. The swift interception of gold immediately after the recent appointment of the Prime Minister’s private secretary as the head of the revenue investigation, followed by the reluctance of the CIB to probe further, raises pertinent questions,” asserted Koirala, adding, “The subsequent events are well known. Nepal is now plagued by rampant gold smuggling. If we are to put a halt to this, a high-level investigation committee must be formed to delve into its origins. Our party needs to seriously consider this matter.”

He contended that Nepal serves as a conduit for gold smuggling into India.
