Conjunctivitis cases surge; half of hospital visitors show infection

KATHMANDU: An outbreak of conjunctivitis infection has swept across the nation in recent days.

Numerous hospitals nationwide are witnessing a surge in individuals afflicted with conjunctivitis.

On average, around 50 percent of patients visiting hospitals with complaints of eye infections are diagnosed with conjunctivitis, according to Dr. Shailesh Kumar Mishra, the Executive Director of Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh.

He noted, “Initially, conjunctivitis was primarily observed in bordering areas near India. However, it has now spread throughout the entire country.” Dr. Mishra emphasized that based on data collected from hospitals within the Sangh’s network, roughly half of those seeking eye check-ups daily are afflicted with conjunctivitis.

According to Sangh’s statistics, a significant 80 percent of patients visiting Rapti Eye Hospital and Lamahi Eye Hospital in Dang on a daily basis are found to be suffering from conjunctivitis infections.

Sangh’s General-Secretary, Bharat Bahadur Chanda, shared that they have issued directives to hospitals and treatment centers under the Sangh to prioritize conjunctivitis-related services due to its widespread prevalence.

The Ministry of Health and Population has already advised the general public to exercise caution as conjunctivitis has been identified in various districts across the country.

Dr. Sameer Adhikari, Joint-Spokesperson at the Ministry, recommended against self-medication for viral conjunctivitis, as it can typically be resolved within one to two weeks with proper home treatment.

Medical professionals advised individuals experiencing any eye-related problems, including vision issues, to promptly seek medical attention at hospitals or healthcare institutions.
