‘5C’ Approach: Time for a positive shift in Nepal’s foreign policy

Foreign policy is a multifaceted and ever-evolving issue. Although I’m not an expert, I acknowledge its profound importance and relevance in a multitude of matters.

Unfortunately, discussions about Nepal’s foreign policy are limited to a handful of experts, leaving the general public with little information.

Accessing relevant and organized information on foreign policy and geopolitical issues in Nepal can be challenging. Nepal’s geography presents both opportunities and challenges due to its position between India and China.

However, our diplomacy has not been effective enough to fully capitalize on these benefits or leverage our neighbors’ successes.

Political governance should help manage such constraints, and we need to overcome any inferiority complex in the face of external impacts.

To achieve our foreign policy goals, we must assert ourselves as a country free from criminal activities and geopolitical rivalries.

Upholding integrity and consistency in our diplomatic engagements enhances Nepal’s reputation on the global stage and increases the likelihood of successful partnerships.

It’s essential to handle non-diplomatic activities and build trust among partner countries to prevent suspicions about each other’s motives.

Strengthening credibility and good governance will form the foundation for Nepal’s foreign policy to effectively address challenges.

Nepal’s foreign policy should not solely rely on geopolitics, as it has become a land of interest for major global powers, leading to visible competition.

This is the time to make a positive shift in Nepal’s foreign policy.

The ‘5C’ principles can serve as a strategic guide to safeguard our national interests, enhance our international reputation, foster fruitful collaborations, and identify opportunities and challenges.

Consistency: Consistency in foreign policy means maintaining a stable and unwavering approach over time, avoiding abrupt shifts with changes in government or leadership.

By presenting a united stand to the international community, Nepal’s political leaders can strengthen national consensus and safeguard long-term interests.

This practice prevents flip-flopping in foreign policy decisions and ensures alignment with the country’s core interests and values.

Continuity: Continuity in Nepal’s foreign policy emphasizes the need to maintain strategic objectives despite internal policy changes or political instability.

Our geopolitical location and role in regional dynamics require a steady and continuous approach to foreign policy, regardless of the government in power.

This ensures that our long-term interests are pursued effectively and diplomatic efforts remain uninterrupted.

Credibility: Credibility in foreign policy is essential for building trust and confidence in Nepal’s engagements with other countries.

By adhering to these principles, Nepal can enhance its international standing and effectively address global challenges while safeguarding its national interests.

Honoring commitments, being transparent in decision-making, and delivering on promises are crucial for fostering trust, even in complex situations.

Upholding integrity and consistency in our diplomatic engagements enhances Nepal’s reputation on the global stage and increases the likelihood of successful partnerships.

Content: The content of Nepal’s international engagements should focus on well-informed and strategic issues that serve our national interests.

By identifying opportunities, challenges, and analyzing our position in the international landscape, we can craft a foreign policy that maximizes benefits for the nation.

Comprehensive analyses will help recognize our strengths, potential risks, and capitalize on development opportunities.

Cooperation: Promoting a collaborative approach in foreign policy is vital. Diplomacy often requires working with other nations to address shared challenges and achieve common goals.

Prioritizing cooperation and negotiations allows Nepal to build constructive relationships with other countries for mutual benefit.

Actively seeking opportunities for collaboration, fostering partnerships, and engaging in diplomatic preparations will enable us to navigate complex international issues effectively.

In conclusion, embracing the ‘5C’ principles of Consistency, Continuity, Credibility, Content, and Cooperation can lead to a positive shift in Nepal’s foreign policy.

By adhering to these principles, Nepal can enhance its international standing and effectively address global challenges while safeguarding its national interests.
