228 drown in Dang in five years

DANG: The number of people losing their lives due to drowning is surging in Dang in the recent years, shows the statistics maintained by the District Emergency Operations Centre, Dang.

In the last five years, 228 people died due to drowning in Dang district. Among them, 174 were male and 54 women of different age groups, said Sushil Vaidya, Chief District Officer (CDO) of Dang.

CDO Vaidhya shared that those deceased were from 13 month old infant to 80 years.

The infant accidently drowned in the water kept in bucket in the courtyard while the 80-year-old suddenly fell into the river while crossing it.

Most of the deceased were from Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City at 71 while 45 were from Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City, 31 from Lamahi Municipality, 22 from Rapti Municipality and 16 from Gadhawa rural municipality among others, it was shared.

Among the deceased, 16 were from out of district, added CDO Vaidya, also District Disaster Management Committee Coordinator.

Most of the drowning incidents were due to lack of caution observed while crossing the river or swimming in river and pond especially in the monsoon, said District Police Office’s DSP Rajan Kumar Gautam.

Also, some had killed themselves plunging into river and some due to gross negligence while swimming, informed DSP Gautam.
