17 rights activists protesting against corruption taken into custody



KATHMANDU: The police have detained 17 human rights activists who were in a sit-in protest at Singh Durbar.

Police arrested 17 right activists from the protest program organized by the Human Rights and Peace Society, a voluntary organization that contributed to the establishment of a democratic republic.

Alleging that democracy is in danger because the top leaders are corrupt, the society staged a sit-in demanding that the main culprits of the fake Bhutanese refugee case should be prosecuted, the three-level government should ensure good governance, transparency, and accountability, and it should behave in accordance with the values of a democratic republic.

As soon as the demonstration started, the police arrested 17 people including, the society’s founding president Krishna Pahadi, civic society leaders Arjun Parajuli, Uttam Pudasaini, Bimal Aryal, rights activists Chandramani Banjara, Namrata Kharel, Kiran Dhakal, Diwakar Pudasaini, Bal Bahadur Gaha Magar, Uma Gautam, Bhagwan Pudasaini, Ishwar Pudasaini, Jayram Pudasaini, Bikas Thapa, Ramesh Kumar Baral, Chandramani Gautam, Rita Adhikari.

The arrested rights activists have been kept at the Nepal Police Club in Bhrikutimandap.
