KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has expressed his serious concern at the government’s preparation to bring a provision to tap the phone conversation of any individuals.

The government is making preparations to introduce the provision of phone tapping by amending the prevalent provision that allows tracking of the location of a person only with the court’s order.

Sharing his reaction to the proposed provisions on phone tapping, Dr. Koirala wrote on social media on Wednesday that phone tapping of an individual under any pretext would be unacceptable as it violates the right to privacy ensured by the Constitution.

“Phone tapping of any individuals under any pretexts is unacceptable. Attempts to reintroduce such provisions make one skeptic about the intention of the government,” he said.

Dr. Koirala also drew the attention of the parties, human rights activists, civil society, and media persons towards such activities as they are connected to national security.
