NHRC urges govt to Conclude transitional justice as soon as possible

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)Nepal has requested the government to take the transitional justice-related issues to logical conclusion as soon as possible.

Issuing a press release on Tuesday, the national human rights body also expressed concern over the incomplete condition of the issues relating to transitional justice even after 16 years.

“NHRC has noted the debates on transitional justice from different angles for the past few days,” the Commission’s Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel said, adding, “The detailed peace accord signed between the state side and the then armed rebel side on 21 November, 2006 stated that justice will be provided to the victims of the conflict through transitional justice, but even after 16 years have passed, some issues of transitional justice have not been resolved.”

Stating that some political parties have been raising questions on the issue of some conflict victims going to the Supreme Court to file a petition demanding justice may have an unwanted effect on the right of the conflict victims to seek justice, NHRC opined that although there is a separate method and process of transitional justice, it is not justified to restrict the right of the victims to enter the judicial body in cases of human rights violations.

The Commission urged the government and other stakeholders to conclude the issues of transitional justice at the earliest.
