Nepal’s first Governor Rana passes away



The first governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank of Nepal, Himalaya Shumsher Rana, has passed away. He was 95.

Family sources said Rana breathed his last this morning while undergoing treatment at Norvic International Hospital in Thapathali, Kathmandu.

Rana had long been afflicting from pneumonia and pulmonary complications. He was admitted to the hospital for treatment some days ago.

He was appointed as the first governor of Nepal on April 22, 1956.

He was also the founder of the Himalaya Bank and the first Finance Secretary of Nepal.

Lately, he was active as a prominent leader of the civil society movement of Nepal. He has also been proactive as the Founder of General Election Observation Committee (GEOC) to advocate for free, fair and impartial elections.

Rana will be cremated at the Pashupati Aryaghat today. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.
