KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC), the largest party in the House of Representatives (HoR), has started collecting signatures for government formation.
NC started collecting the signatures of the lawmakers from Friday.
According to a leader close to Prime Minister and party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, the signatures have been made to show that he has got enough number of lawmakers to form a government.
However, the purpose of collecting the signature has not been mentioned in the paper used to get signatures.
NC has got 89 HoR members, 57 elected directly and 32 proportionally.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari has given the political parties the time till 5 pm for submitting their claim for the government.
The President’s Office has asked the HoR members who can obtain a majority with the support of two or more parties represented in the House of Representatives as per Article 76, Clause 2 of the Constitution, as no party has obtained a clear majority in accordance with Clause 1 of Article 76 of the Constitution, to submit claims for the appointment of the Prime Minister.
Although discussions are intensified between the ruling coalition parties to claim the post of Prime Minister after gaining a majority in Baluwatar, an agreement has not been reached between NC, the largest party in the parliament, and CPN-Maoist Center, the third party.
