Sandeep Lamichhane’s statement continues, trial likely to begin today



KATHMANDU: The statement of cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, who is in police custody for the crime of rape of a minor, continues in the courtroom of Kathmandu District Court Judge Madhav Prasad Ghimire.

Sandeep Lamichhane, the former captain of the Nepali cricket team, was arrested on the October 6 for the crime of raping a 17-year-old girl in a hotel.

According to the girl’s statement, Sandeep raped her on the morning of August 22. The girl had filed a complaint at Gaushala police circle on September 7, saying that she had been raped at the Hotel Kathmandu Inn in Pingalasthan.

Lamichhane, who reached Kenya to play Caribbean Premier League on September 7, was out of contact for sometimes after receiving the information that a case has been filed against him.

After Lamichhane absconded, the Interpol issued a diffusion notice against him. Then he returned to Nepal fearing to be arrested.

After returning to Nepal, he was arrested from Tribhuvan Airport on October 6. District Prosecutor’s office filed a case against Lamichhane demanding 10-12 years imprisonment for raping a minor.

If the statement is finished before lunch time, then preparations are made to start the trial to decide whether to hold him in custody or release him on bail.
