Parliamentary committee to record Rana’s statement today as well

KATHMANDU: The Federal Parliament’s Impeachment Recommendation Committee will record the statement from suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana today as well.

The committee had started taking Rana’s statement from Wednesday. It has set 43 questions for this purpose.

Only two issues were discussed on Thursday while four issues were covered on the first day.

Committee member Min Bishwakarma said it took quite long time to record Rana’s statement as fifth and sixth issues were lengthy and interpretative.

BK said Rana was questioned on poor justice delivery, alleged corruption, failing to maintain checks and balances.

Likewise, Committee member Rekha Sharma said suspended Chief Justice Rana on Thursday made his concerns on neutrality of the committee members and parliamentarians themselves.

Rana was of the view that how such committee could be neutral as the lawmakers filing impeachment motion against him are in the Impeachment Recommendation Committee.

While recording his statement, suspended CJ Rana has claimed that the allegations against him were one-sided and he was innocent.

A meeting of the committee held on August 24 had decided to call the suspended chief justice for recording his statement.

Ninety-eight lawmakers from the House of Representatives had registered an impeachment proposal against Rana on February 13.

Although the parliament formed the Impeachment Recommendation Committee its first meeting was held on August 17.

Nepal Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association had submitted a 34-point letter to the committee, in support of the impeachment against Rana.

The letter incorporates the reason and basis for registering the impeachment motion.
