UML Chair Oli questions acting Chief Justice’s role

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has raised questions about the role of acting Chief Justice Deepak Kumar Karki.

Addressing the first Central Committee meeting of the National Youth Council, Oli, who is also the main opposition leader, doubted the impartiality of acting chief justice.

Chair Oli accused acting Chief Justice Karki of delivering verdicts to help the ruling coalition. He also claimed that acting Chief Justice Karki recently held a meeting with CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.

“You must have read news in newspapers and online. One of the leaders rushed to meet the acting Chief Justice and held talks for 2 hours. Emerging out of there, the leader went to his home and the acting CJ headed to the court. What happened between them? We know that transactions are being held here. We humbly request that justice should be dispensed impartially by the respected Supreme Court. The issues of transactions, scandal or whatever is ongoing should not continue,” said Oli.

Similarly, he claimed that the current ruling coalition was a mere guest and would not last long. Therefore, he asked the judges not be influenced by guests of two days.

“The judges of the court are saying that the court has become corrupt. I want to ask honorable judges to rid the court from corruption. Importantly, justice should be dispensed. The court should not fall under the influence of this coalition as it’s a guest of few days,” he said.

Similarly, Chair Oli claimed that CPN-UML would not tolerate any irregularities. “I also want to tell that if decisions are to be taken in favor of the country, in favor of justice, then UML is always prepared and ready to take steps towards. We are closely watching things. We will not tolerate any injustice,” he said.

Chair Oli comes down heavily on acting Chief Justice

Oli alleged that acting Chief Justice Karki was delivering verdicts in collusion with the ruling coalition. He has raised questions on the role of acting Chief Justice saying that he was acting under the influence of the ruling coalition.

The main issue that he expressed concern about is the case involving appointment of office bearers to constitutional bodies which is under consideration in the constitutional bench.

Acting Chief Justice Karki has been accused of showing undue proactivity in the case with the intent of completing the hearing as soon as possible.

Of late, the opposition party UML has alleged that the acting CJ assigned the coalition-related cases i.e. appointment of IGP and the re-election of Budhiganga in Bajura to his own bench and issued orders in favor of the ruling alliance.

Chief Justice Karki, through the judicial council, is taking action against some judges in a vindictive manner and is continuing to issue judgments and orders that facilitate the ruling coalition, Chair Oli criticized.

“In the name of reforming the court, acting CJ is take action against the judges opposing him.”
