HoR Deputy Speaker to be elected today



KATHMANDU: The election for the post of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives is being held today afternoon.

The parliament meeting will take place 3 pm to start the voting process for the election of the Deputy Speaker.

Pushpa Bhusal of the Nepali Congress is the candidate from the ruling five-party alliance for the post of Deputy Speaker.

Similarly, the main opposition CPN-UML has fielded Bidya Bhattarai.

The post of Deputy Speaker was lying vacant after Dr. Shivamaya Tumbahangfe resigned on January 20, 2020.

Initially, the UML was preparing to support the candidates fielded by fringe parties, but it fielded its own candidate later.

In the 275-member House of Representatives, four posts are vacant. Out of the remaining 271 lawmakers, four were suspended, which means that 266 lawmakers will be able to cast their votes today.

Therefore, the candidate getting 134 votes will become the Deputy Speaker of the HoR.

In today’s HoR meeting, the proposer will propose a candidate for the election to the Deputy Speaker while the lawmaker supporting the proposal shall second it followed by group discussions on the notice of candidacy which will be then put to a vote in accordance with the order of registration.
