Police raid Chinese-run firm suspected of executing illegal acts under cover of business

KATHMANDU: Police have raided a firm run by Chinese nationals on suspicion of illegal activities taking place under cover of business in Pokhara on Thursday.

A team from the District Police Office, Kaski, raided the Chinese-run office on suspicion of cyber crime related activities.

Kaski Police Chief SP Ramesh Thapa said the raid was underway and details were awaited.

According to sources, police are interrogating three Chinese nationals and 75 Nepali nationals working in the company.

Police suspect illegal activities are being carried out by the Chinese-run company which had rented a house at Damsite, Pokhara-17.

Kaski DSP Sundar Tiwari, who is part of the raid team, said police were trying to extract information about the activities that take place under the cover of the company.

Police hold information that Chinese nationals are involved in cyber crime and other fraudulent activities in Nepal.

Based on the information provided by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, the police had arrested 122 Chinese nationals from various places of Kathmandu Valley on December 22, 2020.

The tip-off provided at that time said that around 4,000 Chinese nationals were carrying out illegal activities against China from cities such as Pokhara, Biratnagar and Chitwan, among others, excluding Kathmandu.

The Chinese side had been dissatisfied with Nepal Police at the time alleging that the security organization had give a pass to key masterminds of the racket.

Police had not launched an operation against Chinese-run business suspected of carrying out criminal activities beyond Kathmandu.
