New mayor calls for declaring Pokhara as tourism capital of Nepal

POKHARA: The newly-elected mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City, Dhan Raj Acharya has made three decisions while assuming his office on Thursday.

His first decision is to request a recommendation to the Council of Ministers, the Government of Nepal for declaring Pokhara as the ‘tourism capital’ of Nepal.

Mayor Acharya said that a decision has been made to request the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, through the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, for declaration of tourism capital.

He added that a formal decision has been made in this connection as the federal government ministers had talked on this line from time to time but the matter was not put into implementation.

Similarly, mayor Acharya has decided to provide nutrition allowance to children from impoverished families. This facility would be provided based on the recommendation made by the ward offices.

Another decision is related to the call for proposal for preparing the design of the ‘Pokhara Memorial’ with 3-D depicting the unique identity of Pokhara. Proposal for this would be called from the creative youths from across the country and the procurement process for the construction of the monument forwarded within a month, Mayor Acharya added. The youth whose design is selected would be awarded a cash prize of Rs 200,000.

Deputy mayor Manju Devi Gurung has also put her signature on a decision on implementing a program for establishing equal access for the disabled children in the metropolis to education while taking charge of her office.

Likewise, she has made a decision related to the continuation of and making more effective the ‘women and men awareness program’ for male solidarity in the fight against violence against women.

The elected people’s representatives of the Pokhara Metropolitan City assumed office Thursday after taking the oath of office and secrecy. The final results of the local election for the metropolis were announced on Wednesday.
