SC refuses interim order on writ against IGP Singh’s appointment

Full hearing slated for May 31

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has refused to issue an interim order on the writ petition filed against the government’s decision to appoint Dhiraj Pratap Singh as the Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP).

A bench of Justice Sushma Lata Mathema refused to issue an interim order on the writ petition filed by Additional Inspector General (AIG) Bishwaraj Pokhrel against Singh’s IGP appointment.

Supreme Court Information Officer Devendra Dhakal said the court had sought a written response from the government in relation to Singh’s appointment. “A full hearing on the case has been scheduled for May 31,” he added.

The government attorney appealed to the bench that issuing an interim order at this point of time would affect security situation of the May 13 local election.

AIG Pokharel, who ranked first in the recommendation for IGP on basis on seniority, had filed a writ in the apex court, challenging the government decision to promote Singh as IGP in violation of rules and procedures and claiming him to be the deserving candidate for the post of chief of Nepal Police based on seniority and performance.

AIG Pokhrel had stated in the petition that Singh, an officer junior to him, was appointed IGP.

A cabinet meeting on May 1 promoted Singh to the IGP.
