11 killed as chariot comes into contact with high-voltage cable

KATHMANDU: Eleven people have died of electrocution and 17 others sustained injuries during a chariot procession in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place when a chariot that was being pulled suddenly came into contact with a high-voltage cable at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolence over the kin of the victims and pledged Rs 200,000 each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to those injured.

Similarly, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin has announced Rs 500,000 each to the families of the victims in compensation.
