KATHMANDU: A meeting of the ruling five-party alliance aimed at finalizing the candidates for the metropolitan and sub-metropolitan cities ended inconclusively today.
Top leaders of the ruling alliance including Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and the members of the election preparation and monitoring committee led by NC senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel participated in the meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar.
The ruling alliance’s today’s meeting was expected to finalize the candidates for the metropolitan and sub-metropolitan cities from the center itself.
There are six metropolitan cities and 11 metropolitan cities across the country.
CPN (Unified Socialist) has claimed thee deputy mayoral posts of three sub metropolitan cities and a mayoral post of Pokhara Metropolitan City.
Out of six metropolitan cities, Nepali Congress has claimed mayoral posts of three metropolitan cities while Unified Socialist, CPN (Maoist Center) and Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) have claimed one each.
Both Nepali Congress and Maoist Center have claimed the post of mayor in Bharatpur Metropolitan City.
Even though an agreement has been reached between Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to hand over the mayoral post of Bharatpur metropolis to Maoist Center, the NC supporters at the local level are not satisfied with the decision.
The local elections are being held on May 13.
