China’s Foreign Minister arrives in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has landed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu Friday afternoon.

Yi, who had reached Pakistan on Monday, arrived in Kathmandu on Friday afternoon after wrapping up visits to Afghanistan and India.

The Chinese Foreign Minister is leading a 25-member Chinese delegation to Nepal.

This is the first high-level visit by a Chinese official after Nepal’s parliament ratified the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Nepal Compact, which China had been against.

The Chinese Foreign Minister is to directly head to the hotel after landing in Kathmandu and is scheduled to start official visits from Saturday. A special security arrangement has been made for the Chinese Foreign Minister’s security.

While in Kathmandu, he will meet President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli and CPN- Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.

As early as 6:30 am on Saturday, Yi is scheduled to go on a hike to Shivapuri. He will hold bilateral talks with his counterpart Narayan Khadka later in the day. He is also to pay a courtesy visit to PM Deuba tomorrow itself.

He will return from Nepal on Sunday after meeting the Head-of-the-State.

The Chinese Foreign Minister’s schedule to meet top Nepali political leaders has yet to be made public.

According to sources, the implementation of China’s Belt and Road Concept (BRI) implementation plan is likely to be signed during the visit, but it has not been finalized yet.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yi is expected to announce financial assistance to Nepal. It is said 12 different agreements will be signed.

Wang Yi flew to Kathmandu from New Delhi, where he reached on Thursday, in the first high-level visit by a Chinese official in more than two years since the standoff between the two nations in eastern Ladakh.
