UML Chair Oli flatly rejects idea of leftist alliance in upcoming local level polls

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has out rightly rejected a proposal of unity among leftist forces in the upcoming local level election.

Party leaders Ghanshyam Bhusal and Raghuji Panta, at the UML Politburo meeting held in Kathmandu on Monday, floated the proposal of uniting communist forces to ensure leftist victory in the polls.  They had also justified their proposal with three reasons.

However, Chair Oli flatly rejected the proposal, according to UML sources.

“Our priority is on elections at the moment and I urge everybody to focus towards election preparation. We cannot unite with those that left us in the past making us vulnerable. Such a proposal is unacceptable and no one should float such an idea,” sources said, quoting the UML chair.

Reportedly, Oli viewed that CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and CPN-Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal were not fit to be called communists, and thus, ruled out any form of alliance with them.

UML publicity department chief Prithvi Subba Gurung informed that 21 leaders had put forth their views in the Politburo meeting.

“21 leaders expressed their views today. They stressed electoral alliance among leftist parties. However, the matter will be discussed in the meeting of the Central Committee,” he said.

The Central Committee meeting of the UML is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday.

Gurung said leaders demanded clarity from the party leadership regarding electoral alliance in view of the approaching elections. “We do not want to make a fuss about alliance between the left and democratic forces. We will move ahead with self-confidence. We will move towards forming a majority government in all places on our own to the extent possible. Electoral alliance at the local level could take place on the basis of need. However, no decision has been taken on it.”
