KATHMANDU: Eighteen years on, the royal massacre that claimed the lives of ten members of the royal family including King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya, is still mysterious.

An investigation carried out by a two-man committee comprising of the then Chief Justice Keshav Prasad Upadhaya and the then House Speaker Taranath Ranabhat held the then crown prince, Dipendra, responsible for the murder of his parents and seven others.

But, people still don’t believe that the then crown prince was responsible for the gruesome murder and are demanding a ‘fair probe’ into the massacre.

Some questions as such — who provoked Dipendra to kill his own family members, why bodyguards failed to stop killings and why Dipendra committed suicide — are still unanswered.

The building, called ‘Tribhuvan Sadan’, where the royal massacre took place on June 1, 2001, was demolished after the massacre. The demolition has raised many questions that are still unanswered, according to historian Prof Dr. Raj Kumar Pokharel who has authored a book on the royal massacre.
