Unified Socialist decides to allow tabling MCC for discussion in parliament

KATHMANDU: The ruling coalition partner, the CPN-Unified Socialist Party, has decided to help table the US grant Millennium Challenge Corporation in parliament for discussion.

A meeting of the Standing Committee of the third-largest party in the ruling coalition on Saturday decided not to block discussions on MCC in parliament, leaders said.

“MCC cannot be passed in its current form but it should not be stopped from being taken to the parliament for discussion. It has been decided that it should be discussed in the sovereign parliament,” said Ram Kumari Jhankri, a leader of the Unified Socialist, who is also the Urban Development Minister.

According to leader Jhankri, the Unified Socialist have maintained that the MCC agreement should be amended.

“In the event of a dispute, our position is that the project should be in accordance with the prevailing laws of Nepal, Nepal should have authority over the intellectual property obtained from the project, Nepalis should be given priority in employment and the project should not hamper the security of the neighboring countries,” she said.
