KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has said the United States grant Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) should be taken to the parliament for an ultimate decision.
Speaking at a program organized in Bhaktapur on Saturday, Oli reiterated that the MCC should be taken to the people’s sovereign parliament for a decision to be made on it.
“When we were in government we said, ‘Let’s table MCC in parliament so that the parliament can decide’. There are elected representatives in the parliament. We have reached the US grant agreement in the decision-making place,” he said. “But a decision on it has yet to be taken. Even now, parties do not take it to a decision-making point but rather put flame to the issue and protest outside of parliament instead of deciding the matter in the parliament.”
“When taking about foreign relation, the then ruling coalition signed the compact five years ago. Today, those who are in government were the same people in government five years ago. They are making MCC an issue to cheat the people. After the UML government was formed, they said ‘we’ll pass the agreement after removing the UML from power.’ They kept postponing the matter,” UML Chair Oli said.
“By now, they have screwed foreign relations and Nepal’s foreign policy,” he added.
