Bharatpur Metropolitan City to manage wastes with support from South Korea

CHITWAN: The Bharatpur Metropolitan City has received technical and financial support from the Government of the Republic of Korea to manage waste.

Both the countries are set to sign a memorandum of understanding to build a landfill site at the cost of Rs 1.25 billion in a few days.

Mayor of Bharatpur Renu Dahal said a master plan has been prepared for waste management in the first phase with support from Republic of Korea. The report has been prepared after carrying out a detailed study about the waste management of the city.

Dahal shared that the activities for the waste management are going to be under government to government modality and an agreement would be signed in this regard within a few days.

The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration should sign such an agreement since the local levels directly cannot receive foreign assistance. A modern scientific landfill site would be constructed at Bharatpur Metropolitan City, according to Mayor Dahal.

The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has already sent a file to the Finance Ministry after completing all the processes. Chief of Planning and Foreign Assistance Coordination Division of the Finance Ministry Bishnu Dutta Gautam said preparations were made to complete the task last December but got delayed due to COVID-19.

The Finance Ministry is all set to sign an agreement within few days after completing all process, it is said.

Similarly, Chief Administrative Officer of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Ram Bandhu Subedi, shared that the landfill site would cover around 9.9 hectares of land in Jaldevi Community Forest at Aanptari to manage around 100 tonnes of wastes on daily basis.
