KATHMANDU: Despite the commitments to eliminate corruption, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government has not made any substantive improvement in corruption control yet, a recent report of Transparency International claimed.
According to Transparency International, Nepal has not made substantive progress in corruption control since last year; hence, it ranks 117th out of 180 countries of the world. Nepal was in the same position during CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli-led government last year.
The Corruption Perceptions Index, released by Transparency International, shows that the corruption situation in Nepal has not improved at all.
The value of the Corruption Perceptions Index ranges from 0 to 100. Of these, 0 indicates a highly corrupt country and 100 indicates a country with good governance. Nepal has got 33 points out of 100. This means that corruption is intense and deep in Nepal.
In south Asia, Bhutan stands as the least corrupt country scoring 68 out of 100. It is in the 25th position from the top. India and the Maldives scored the 40 and secured 84th and 85th position respectively.
The report shows that Sri Lanka scored 37 to come in 103rd position in the list. Similarly, Pakistan scored 28 out of 100 points to stand in 141st position. Bangladesh scored 26 points and got settled on the 146th rank in the list.
According to Transparency International report Hong Kong scored 76 to stand at the top from Asia whereas Japan scored 73 to follow Hong Kong as the second least corrupt place in Asia. China, ranked 66th, scoring 45 out of 100.
Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand are enlisted as the least corrupt country in the report. These three countries have got 88 points out of 100.
The most corrupt countries in the world are African countries like South Sudan, Syria, Somalia. South Sudan, ranked 180th in the rankings, has only 11 points out of 100.
Afghanistan got listed as the most corrupt country in South Asia scoring 16 out of 100. It is in the 173 position in the list.
Sadly, more than two-thirds of the countries of the world have a score of less than 50 out of 100 which means most of the countries are still unable to curb corruption.
