KATHMANDU: The ruling coalition is holding a meeting to finalize the date for elections even today.

A meeting of the political coordination committee held on Tuesday had agreed to hold the elections on time but had not reached a concrete decision.

Even though the Election Commission recommended to hold the elections on mid-April to mid-May, the government has yet to take a final decision on it.

On the other hand, the Election Commission, civil society, main opposition CPN-UML and the representatives of the local units have been demanding that the elections be held on time.

The government has been under pressure to finalize the date for elections within this week. The ruling coalition has been discussing to hold federal elections in mid-April to mid-May and local elections in mid-October to mid-November.

The government has to hold elections two months before the expiry of the terms of the rural and municipal assemblies, according to the Local Level Elections Act, 2017.
