KATHMANDU: A group of disgruntled activists has pelted stones at the residence of Madhesh Province Chief Minister Lal Babu Raut on Tuesday.
Not everyone in the province is happy that Janakpur is made the state capital. The state assembly meeting on Monday voted to make Janakpur the permanent capital of the state and took “Madhesh” as the state name.
Dissatisfied factions burned the effigy of CM Raut at Ghantaghar Chowk in Birgunj last evening after the state assembly vote.
Nepali Congress Birgunj Metropolitan Committee held a motorcycle rally from 2 pm today, protesting the designation of Janakpur as capital against their demand to make Birgunj the state capital. The rally, which saw disgruntled people wearing black bands on arms, turned towards the Chief Minister’s residence in Radhemai while en route Powerhouse Chowk.
According to the District Police Office, Parsa, window panes at the CM’s house were shattered when a youth participating in the rally pelted stones.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Khanal, the rally was to reach the powerhouse but took an instant turn. “Some youths suddenly turned towards Radhemai from the rally that was on way to the powerhouse,” said Khanal.
DSP Khanal said that the youth who threw stones was identified through close-circuit cameras and currently is in police custody.
