Associations of elected representatives call for timely local level election

KATHMANDU: National Association of Rural Municipalities in Nepal, Municipal Association of Nepal (MuAN) and Association of District Coordination Committees of Nepal (ADCCN) have jointly urged the government and the Election Commission to initiate the process for local level elections in the country.

Issuing a statement Monday, the organizations reminded that there could be a constitutional crisis if the election was missed, affecting all the administrative and executive works of the local levels. The statement added that service seekers would also face the burnt of consequence of not holding election on time.

The organizations, recalling the loss to the country in the past when local elections were not held for long, said all local levels representatives want a timely election and have not envisioned local levels without representatives in accordance to the constitution.

There is constitutional provision that the Election Commission must declare a date for local level election 120 days ahead. The term of current local level, provincial and federal representatives is expiring later this year on May 21, July 5 and September 23 respectively.

Stating that there was no alternative to hold elections on time, the organizations called for timely elections for the implementation of constitution and the institutional development of federalism in the country.
