Maoist Center Election schedule: Candidacy registration 8-10 pm Saturday

KATHMANDU: Election Commission of CPN-Maoist Center has published the election schedule for the election of central members from the ongoing 8th General Convention of the party.

As per the schedule, the deadline for registration of candidature is from 8 pm to 10:30 pm on Saturday. Voting is scheduled to take place on Sunday from 11:30 am to 4 pm.

Earlier, the closed session of the Convention was postponed till 5 pm to seek consensus in the selection of central members by consensus.

Accordingly, the Standing Committee had tried to seek the name by consensus in a meeting held at the convention venue, Pragyabhawan, Kamaladi, Kathmandu.

According to a leader,  Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has told the delegates that he would prefer consensus; however, if consensus could not be made, there would be a democratic process of selection, i.e. through election.

According to the Maoist Center constitution, a 299-member Central Committee will be elected. The elected Central  Committee will elect 15 office-bearers, including the chairman. Election Commission has published the list of 1,742 delegates as eligible for voting.

The general convention will elect the Central Committee while the Central Committee will elect Politburo, Standing Committee and office-bearers. Election of Politburo, Standing Committee and office-bearers will take place based on the inclusive principle.

The 50 percent proportional category ensures Dalit, Muslim, Tharu, Madheshi, indigenous communities, Khas Arya, people with disabilities, backward communities, women and youth’s representation.

In central committee, 35 percent participation of women, 20 percent participation of youth below 40 years is ensured in all clusters and open category
