New Year 2022 begins, being marked in Nepal, too

KATHMANDU: The New Year 2022 has started from today according to the Gregorian calendar.

It is said that the Gregorian calendar (AD) calendar started after the execution of Jesus Christ.

Pope Gregory XIII introduced this current calendar by modifying the Julian calendar, so it is called the New Year according to the Gregorian calendar.

The Julian calendar had been introduced by the ruler Julius Caesar. According to Dr. Khilanath Bastakoti, a former administrator and astrologer, this calendar was introduced by Russia only after 200 years, due to the controversy.

Despite the controversy, it is now widely used across the world since it was imposed in various countries during the colonial era.

Though AD is not popular in Nepal, it is used by visiting foreigners. The celebration of ‘New Year’ as per the Gregorian calendar is gaining popularity, of late.

New Year’s Eve is observed at Thamel, Boudha, Pokhara, Sauraha, Lumbini and other places of the Kathmandu Valley which are crowded with foreign tourists.
