Police nab woman for defrauding Rs 2 million by giving false assurance of freeing Chinese national held on rape charge

KATHMANDU: Police have nabbed a woman who fleeced another woman, Kamal Bhusal, of Rs 2 million, assuring the release of the latter’s husband — a Chinese national — arrested on charge of rape.

A team from the crime branch of metropolitan police arrested 26-year-old Rabina Thapa, a resident of Panauti, Kavre, currently residing in Sukedhara, Kathmandu, for defrauding Bhusal and giving Bhusal false assurances that her husband would be released after paying Rs 2 million.

Spokesperson of the Division, Krishna Pangeni, said Thapa and her accomplice Manju Oli had sought Rs 2 million from Bhusal for ensuring the Chinese national’s release. Stating that they had influence in the court, they took money from Bhusal, the wife of the Chinese citizen.

However, after the Kathmandu District Court ordered to send the accused Chinese national to jail for trial, wife of the Chinese national Bhusal realized she was cheated and approached the police.

Following Bhusal’s complaint, police arrested Thapa and are investigating the case. Meanwhile, Oli is on the run.
