Supreme Court to introduce lottery system to assign cases to benches

KATHMANDU: After the publication of the provisions of assigning cases to benches through lottery system in Nepal Gazette, the Supreme Court set to adopt the new system from December 1.

The provision regarding the amendment of the rules made by the Supreme Court was published in the Nepal Gazette Monday.

Earlier, full court meeting had amended the provisions curtailing the rights of the Chief Justice and depriving him of the right to assign cases to the benches of his choice. CJ Rana also agreed to such an arrangement and decided to implement it from November 30.

The judges have been protesting for the past one month saying that there would be irregularities and opacity when the Chief Justice has the right to assign cases.

The Nepal Bar Association, on the other hand, has been agitating demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Rana.

The agitation against him had erupted after the news came out that Chief Justice Rana was also seeking a cabinet berth for his close ones in government.
