Nepal Bar submits memo to CPN-Unified Socialist seeking impeachment of Chief Justice Rana

Set to announce fifth phase of protest programs

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association, which is agitating demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, handed over a memorandum to the ruling coalition partner CPN-Unified Socialist on Sunday.

Nepal Bar officials submitted the memo to Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal. The memo includes demand of bringing an impeachment motion against CJ Rana in parliament.

Receiving the memo, Chair Nepal told Nepal Bar officials that he would discuss crisis in the judiciary in the party and the ruling coalition.

Earlier, the professional umbrella organization of all the lawyers in Nepal has already drawn the attention of the ruling Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center, Janata Samajwadi Party, Rastriya Janamorcha Party and other opposition parties, including CPN-UML, on the issue.

Nepal Bar Association has continously staged sit-ins at the Supreme Court, calling for resignation of CJ Rana, since October 25. The fourth phase of Nepal Bar’s protest concluded last Friday and the umbrella organization of all lawyers is set to announce its fifth phase of agitation.

Earlier today, Nepal Bar called the working committee meeting to decide on the nature of protest to take ahead from Monday. “The meeting will discuss the model of the upcoming movement and then the announcement will be made,” said Nepal Bar Chairman Chandeshwor Shrestha.
