NC President Deuba “not in favor of electoral alliance” with other parties

KATHMANDU: It’s been learned that Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba is not in favor of an electoral alliance with the ruling partners in the upcoming elections.

President Deuba, who is also the Prime Minister, urged his party’s central leaders not to go behind rumors of electoral alliance with the ruling partners.

“So far as electoral alliance is concerned, we have not made any decision,” an NC leader quoted PM Deuba as saying during Sunday’s meeting.

PM Deuba was of the view that NC can “stand alone” to contest the elections.

His views, meanwhile contradict the opinion of CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” and CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, who have been claiming that the ruling partners would go for an electoral alliance.

It should be noted that central party members had raised the issue of electoral alliance with Deuba.

Meanwhile, party leader Prakash Man Singh came down heavily on PM Deuba over the issue of electoral alliance and the formation of the Political Coordination Committee labeling it “unconstitutional”.

“Since you (Deuba) is leading the coalition government, what do you need a mechanism?” Singh asked PM Deuba, raising concern over such a mechanism that has been formed due to the pressure of the communist parties.

In response, PM Deuba told Singh that it was just a coordination committee among the five ruling parties.
