PM Deuba making preparations to expand cabinet today

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is making preparations to expand the Council of Ministers today.

With the revocation of the ordinance on party split on Monday, Prime Minister Deuba is making preparations to expand the cabinet.

There had been fear of party split due to dissatisfaction among the coalition leaders, if the cabinet were expanded without annulling the ordinance.

The government had introduced the ordinance on party split to facilitate leaders Madhav Kumar Nepal and Mahantha Thakur to break away from their mother parties.

According to the provision in the ordinance, a party could be split with 20 percent of lawmakers in its parliamentary party.

Based on the ordinance introduced by Prime Minister Deuba, leader Nepal defected to form CPN (Unified Socialist) and Thakur faction split the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) to form Democratic Socialist Party.
