Govt makes training mandatory for obtaining work permit

KATHMANDU: The government has made a 3-month-long training mandatory for obtaining a work permit to foreign-bound Nepali workers.

Starting from June 30 this year, Nepali workers sans job-related skills cannot obtain a work permit without undergoing a three-month skill development training.

With the decision of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security, the Department of Foreign Employment has made it mandatory for Nepali workers to have undergone a three months’ of professional training before flying abroad for foreign employment.

According to the new rule, those applying for a work permit have to submit a certificate of professional skill in line with the Foreign Employment Act, 2064, according to Bhola Nath Adhikari, the spokesperson at the Department.

It has been made mandatory for the Nepali workers taking into consideration the problems faced by Nepali youths in a foreign land due to lack of skills.

Currently, the Department is looking for institutes that provide professional training to foreign job aspirants. The selected institutes will have to provide training at the provincial and local levels.

Meanwhile, the operator of the institute should at least have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent along with an experience of at least six months to one year in skill development.

The institutes should also deposit the required amount of money as collateral as per the regulations.

A training institute can impart training on five job-related subjects in a local unit, such as wiring electrician, waiter, cook, security guard, still fixers, housekeeping, cleaner, scaffolding, and plumbing, among others, according to the Department.

According to the statistics maintained by the Department, over 70 percent of foreign-bound Nepali workers are unskilled. The government has introduced the provision to minimize unskilled out-bound Nepali workers.
