UML objects to new budget, postpones statute convention by two weeks

KATHMANDU: The main opposition CPN-UML has expressed its displeasure over the government’s new budget. It accused the ruling parties of shelving popular programs brought by UML-led government for the fiscal year 2021/22 and introducing new programs indiscriminately.

The Standing Committee meeting of the UML held on Saturday concluded that it was coercive move of the government to bring a new budget through a replacement bill while they were protesting against the role of the Speaker in the party split.

“The budget was brought in a sudden manner without consultation or prior information to the opposition,” said UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai. Stating that the previous government had cut down some popular development projects, including roads, and introduced new projects out of nowhere, UML secretary Bhattarai said, “We object to this.”

Meanwhile, UML’s Statute Convention has been postponed for two weeks. The Standing Committee decided to hold the Statute Convention, previously slated for September 20-22, on October 1-3 in the capital.
