Speaker Mahara instructs removal of ‘inappropriate’ remarks

KATHMANDU: In the first of this kind in the country’s parliamentary practice, the parliament has instructed to remove Prime Minister’s ‘inappropriate’ remarks.

Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara on Friday instructed the removal of ‘inappropriate’ remarks used by Prime Minister KP Oli while furnishing answers to the questions raised by the opposition lawmakers about the government’s policies and programs at Tuesday’s session of the House of Representatives (HoR).

Speaker Mahara took a bold decision to instruct the parliament secretariat to remove those words, which the opposition lawmakers argued ‘failed to comply with the dignity of the parliament’.

He gathered applauds from the opposition lawmakers when he instructed the parliament secretariat to delete the words used by the Prime Minister while answering to queries of the Nepali Congress lawmakers on the government’s policies and programs. He also instructed the Secretariat to remove the inappropriate words used by the opposition party lawmakers.

It should be recalled that Prime Minister Oli had arrogantly said that he would furnish his answers to what he had said ‘illogical, feeble and spurious’ queries, which angered the opposition lawmakers leading to heated arguments in Friday’s parliamentary session.

As soon as PM Oli had completed his initial remarks, NC lawmaker Min Bahadur Bishwokarma soon joined by other NC lawmakers, stood up from his seat and objected to the PM’s remarks. NC parliamentarians had on Friday termed PM Oli’s words of being against the parliamentary dignity.

On Friday, Speaker Mahara did not immediately instruct the Secretariat to remove those word but said that his attention was drawn by the objection raised by the opposition lawmakers.

On Thursday, NC President Deuba had criticized Speaker Mahara of being a ‘gutless’ Speaker in the country’s parliamentary practice.
