Govt to amend Political Parties Act to help Nepal-Khanal faction to split party

KATHMANDU: The government is making preparations to amend the law on political parties to make it easier for senior CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) chairman Mahantha Thakur to split the party.

As per the current constitutional provision, in order to split a party, a leader must have at least 40 percent of lawmakers in both the parliamentary party and the central committee.

In order to resolve this problem, the Nepali Congress-led government has started preparations to amend the Political Parties Act. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has initiated discussions with the coalition members of the government to this effect, sources have said.

Dispute between senior leader Nepal and Chairman KP Sharma Oli is still growing within the CPN-UML. As things stand, the Nepal-Khanal faction lacks 40 percent members in both the Parliamentary Party and the Central Committee to open a new party.

The Nepal-Khanal faction of the CPN-UML has discussed the issue of forming a new party without Chairman KP Sharma Oli saying that they will get a majority within the party.

The lawmakers floated the suggestion during a meeting between 22 lawmakers who had given a vote of confidence to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Regarding the participation in the government, the Nepal-Khanal faction is ready to take a decision following a legal consultation and will join it if there is a guarantee that the lawmakers will not lose their memberships.
