NC lawmaker Amaresh Kumar Singh resigns

KATHMANDU: Amid the mounting tension about the dispute over the distribution of active membership in the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), leader Dr. Amaresh Kumar Singh has resigned from the post of member of parliament (MP).

According to NC sources, lawmaker Singh submitted his resignation to Prime Minister and NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Wednesday afternoon.

Leaders and cadres of Bara, Dhanusha and Sarlahi are protesting at the NC Central Office at Sanepa over the active membership dispute. They have been demanding to scrap the active membership given against the party constitution.

Lawmaker Singh resigned today expressing solidarity with the demands of the protesters.

Before handing over the letter of resignation to the Prime Minister, he had talks with senior leaders Ram Chandra Poudel, General Secretary Dr. Shashank Koirala and Purna Bahadur Khadka and leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala.

“The cadres who worked day and night for the party have been sidelined while contractors and traders have been given active membership,” Singh expressed his dissatisfaction and said, adding, “It is regretful the leadership did not address the issue on time.”

Singh is a member of parliament from Constituency No. 4, Sarlahi.

Leaders and cadres of Bara, Dhanusha and Sarlahi are on strike for more than 10 days at party office Sanepa.
