KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued a show cause order in a writ petition seeking to stop the Kaligandaki diversion multi-purpose project.

A single bench of Justice Tej Bahadur KC called the opposition demanding a written reply. According to SC sources, advocates Tulsiram Pokhrel, Ram Bahadur Shahi and Santosh Bhandari had filed the writ petition demanding to stop the Kaligandaki diversion multipurpose project claiming it has adverse impact on ecology.

The project will affect millions of locals in Gandaki and the river basin (from Ramdi to Devghat), the petitioners said.

Kaligandaki is the only river in the world where one can get the special stones called shaligram.

The shaligram is regarded as a holy stone by the hindu community.

The project seeks to divert the naturally flowing river from Syangja’s Galyang Municipality-1 to the Tinau River, in Rupandehi.

The next hearing on the writ is on July 19.
