UML leader Basnet seeks review on federalism, secularism

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet has put an eight-point proposal, including the review on federalism and secularism, at Saturday’s Central Committee meeting.

In his written proposal, former Minister Basnet proposed a review on federalism, a declaration of the country’s unique identity, and a debate on secularism. Similarly, he proposed a change on the form of government and suggested to initiate discussion on a directly elected prime minister.

Youth leader Basnet also proposed to make the constitutional provision that no person could hold the post of Prime Minister more than two times. Likewise, he proposed that the office bearers could not retain the post more than three terms.

Basnet suggested that the party ensure 40 percent representation of youths in the party and the province government and other governing positions.

He requested the Central Committee to include the proposed amendments in the party constitution and election manifesto.
