KATHMANDU: Prithvi Subba Gurung, leader of the main opposition CPN-UML parliamentary party in Gandaki, has said that he will support the provincial government in its efforts to strengthen federalism.
Participating in the discussion held Friday in Gandaki Provincial Assembly (PA) on the motion of no-confidence put forward by Chief Minister Krishna Chandra Nepali Pokharel, Gurung, who is also a former chief minister, said that democracy would be strong only if federalism was strengthened.
“Tomorrow anybody’s government can be formed at the center. Even then, one should be able to raise voice to strengthen federalism,” he said. “If this government is determined to strengthen federalism, the UML is always ready to help.”
Gurung added that there is a problem in the mentality of the leaders of Kathmandu in regard to the implementation of federalism. However, he warned that those who tried to undermine the system would face retaliationion.
At the beginning of his address, Gurung said that CM Pokharel was the most mature and conscientious leader out of the 59 members in the PA. He had added it was difficult not to vote for Pokharel, who comes from a family with political history.
However, he concluded by saying that this motion was not based on individual votes, and from a political stand he could not give the vote to Pokharel as of this day.
