NRB directs banks to open branches in view of customer pressure

KATHMANDU: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has made an amendment to its previous directive and has directed the banks and financial institutions to open their branches in view of the pressure of customers.

Issuing a notice on Monday, the Central Bank urged the banks and financial institutions to decide about the number of branches and the time to open by considering the customer pressure in the respective branches or offices.

Earlier, issuing notice on May 30, NRB had urged the banks and financial institutions to confine their services to minimum number of branches in Kathmandu Valley. As per May 30 directive, commercial banks could open only six branches, development banks four, and financial institutions two branches in the Valley.

However, after the decision of Valley Chief District Officers to relax the prohibitory order, though slightly, the NRB has empowered the concerned banks and financial institutions to decide about the number of service-providing branches.

The Central Bank has still urged the banks to abide by the health safety standards and work with the minimum number of staff possible till the pandemic threat declines.
