KATHMANDU: Docskool and Plan International Nepal officially launched a virtual event ‘Let’s She-nema’ Wednesday where film students, actors, producers, and stakeholders of Nepali Cinema vibrantly discussed the representation of women and girls in Nepali Cinema.

The virtual event, hosted by Gauthali Entertainment, also released a research ‘Representations of women and girls in Nepal’s cinema’ in the opening day today.

The research highlighted the characterization of women in Nepali films and put forward various recommendations to stakeholders of Nepali cinema industry.

The research presented data from an analysis of 47 films, television, online materials and visual advertisements emphasizing on film’s content, filmmakers, and Nepali cinema’s audiences. Besides content study, Docskool also conducted key interviews with film professionals, and film representatives, alongside focus group discussions with girls and young women from Province 1 (Sunsari), Bagmati Province (Sindhuli, Kathmandu), Lumbini Province (Banke) and Karnali province (Jumla).

Today’s virtual discussion delved into Nepali cinema’s role of perpetuating harmful stereotypes that prevent girls and young women from fulfilling their potential and encouraged stakeholders to adopt and apply cinema practices that are respectful of diversity and more acknowledging of contemporary aspirations of a younger Nepali audience.

The ‘Let’s She-nema’ campaign will continue till June 5 with events planned for each day.
