Crisis looms over republic and constitution: Speaker Sapkota

KATHMANDU: Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota has said a crisis loomed over the republic and the constitution.

Extending wishes on Republic Day Saturday, Speaker Sapkota stressed the first duty of high-ranking officials of the nation was to institutionalize the republic by internalizing federalism, secularism, proportional representational system and inclusivity, among other principles, as envisaged by the constitution.

“We are plagued by a crisis over the republic and the constitution on one hand, and the Covid-19 pandemic is terrorizing us on the other,” Sapkota said. “At such hour stronger national unity is needed for the institutional development of the Federal Democratic Republic,” he added.

He also said the declaration of the republic by the first meeting of the House of Representatives on May 28, 2008, was the outcome of the sacrifice and struggle of the Nepali people.
