Private sector takes lead to speed up PCR testing in Itahari

BIRATNAGAR: Local traders, entrepreneurs and other social activists of Itahari have started privately-run PCR testing facility here from Tuesday. This is the first privately led PCR testing facility in the Sub-Metropolitan City. The testing is carried out at People’s Multiple Health Institute of Itahari-10.

A 80-bed isolation center is also set up at the venue. According to Pawan Adhikari, one of the activists involved in the setup of the facility, the PCR testing for suspected COVID-19 patients will be done in association with the Nobel Medical College of Biratngar. The PCR testing will not be free, said Adhikari.

He said the price for PCR testing is Rs. 750 and the results will be provided to the beneficiaries without any delay. The isolation center is equipped with television, high-speed internet, motivational books and some sporting equipment.

Medical professionals would be available at the spot which is provided security by Nepal Army, said Adhikari. He added, ”We are prepared to initiate this center at the earliest. However, we could not do so owing to varied obstacles.” In Itahari, local government has also set up a 50-bed isolation center at Itahari Stadium.

The center carries out free PCR testing of 100 individuals in a day on an average, said deputy mayor Laxmi Gautam.

According to Gautam, the testing rate will be tripled in the days ahead. Itahari is collaborating with BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences and Provincial Laboratory of Biratnagar for PCR testing.
