Former Minister Sah lauds Citizenship Ordinance

KATHMANDU: Outgoing Urban Development Minister and leader Prabhu Sah has lauded the Nepal Citizenship Ordinance (First Amendment) 2021.

Reacting to President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s issuance of the Nepal Citizenship Ordinance (First Amendment) 2021 on Sunday, Sah said that he was happy that his tireless efforts reached the final stage of resolving the citizenship issue of millions of people.

“With the bringing in of the Citizenship Ordinance, I feel my efforts to see thousands of youths deprived of their citizenship despite being Nepali nationals getting citizenship have come to materialization,” former Minister Sah said in his statement.

Sah has thanked President Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Oli for the ordinance.

Earlier, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had issued the Citizenship (First Amendment) Ordinance on Sunday afternoon.

The Citizenship Ordinance provisions for providing ‘citizenship by descent’ to off-springs of Nepali nationals who obtained the citizenship by birthright, according to a source.

It also addresses the demands of Madesh-centric parties.

Children of Nepali nationals, who received citizenship by birth, did not receive citizenship by descent earlier.

Prime Minister KP Oli recommended the President to issue the Citizenship Ordinance through Cabinet decision to address the demand of Madhesh-centric parties.

A Citizenship Bill had been under discussion at the parliament for the past two years.

With Saturday’s dissolution of the parliament, the citizenship-related law has come into effect through the ordinance.
