UML leader Shakya objects to party’s call for explanation

Says it violates the right to privacy of vote

HETAUDA: CPN-UML leader Ashta Lakshmi Shakya has lambasted the province parliamentary party (PP) Board’s decision to seek clarification against the leaders including her in allegation of violating the party discipline.

Speaking to the media about UML’s  said that  the decision to ask party lawmakers clarification alleging them of not voting to the party candidate is against the right to privacy of vote.

However, she said that she has no information about the meeting of the province PP Board held at the residence of Bagmati Province Chief Minister Dormani Poudel.

Shakya, the leader of UML’s disgruntled Nepal-Khanal group, claimed that she was not asked about the explanation from anywhere and did not even have phone contact.

Earlier, the PP Board of the CPN-UML had decided to seek clarification from 14 members of the Provincial Assembly for casting vote against UML candidate Ram Bahadur Badal in the by-elections of the National Assembly held on Thursday.

Leader Shakya said that there was no justification for the explanation as the voters were supposed to not show it to anyone while voting in the by-elections.

“There is no need for an explanation,” she said, adding, “The votes are cast secretly. Seeking explanation on such votes is against the democratic system.”

She  also said that she was not informed about the PP Board’s meeting  and accused CM Poudel of sitting alone without even informing them at the board meeting.

Former CPN-Maoist Center leader Ram Bahadur Thapa had contested from UML in the byelection and was defeated by an independent candidate Dr. Khim Lal Devkota.

Dr. Devkota, also very close to UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal was elected with the support from Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, Janata Samajbadi Party and Rastriya Janamorcha.

UML’s PM Oli faction is irate against the leaders close to leader Nepal hailing them responsible for party candidate Thapa’s defeat.
